The Buzz
With the buzz of this new fitness place in Winter Garden, more people are taking a look at what’s happening in West Orange FL.  New clients are puzzled when they park their cars at what seems to be an office parking lot.  The interior of this fitness place appears more like a warehouse rather than a typical gym.  There are several benches, bars, medicine balls, ropes, and a lot of other things along the wall.  These items are used for varied routines that are combinations of the different disciplines that Neil Barnhill, the head trainer of Winter Garden Athletic Club (WGAC), learned and applies in the fitness programs that he conducts.

Neil trains people aged 30s up until the 70s.  He is flexible in terms of class size and routines.  He does not want to terrify people who have the notion that they should be workout machines.  Instead, he conducts a fitness assessment and takes things from there.  The initial assessment includes initial consultation, discussion of the participants’ form and functions, and also nutritional consultation.  This assessment is a very important part in determining the routine and workout that is best for the student.  After this assessment, Neil allows them to go through basic training program which teaches foundational movements.  These movements are the building blocks that the students step on one by one as they progress and persevere in their customized fitness training program.  Neil does personal and private one-on-one training, while he also offers group classes.

Pursuing the Passion: Teaching and Helping
Before pursuing his career in fitness, Neil’s specialization was golf.  He used to play golf for Georgia Southern University before he did it professionally.  He became a golf teacher and a Head Golf Professional for almost 10 years before the recession hit not only the real estate industry, but also the golfing business.

Neil thought of other ways to help people since this is one of his passions aside from teaching.  That was when he considered not only teaching people how to play a certain game, but truly helping them by improving their overall health.  One way that he could do this is by being a fitness instructor.

Neil’s two worlds – golfing and fitness – eventually collided when younger golfers aimed to have that muscular and athletic build as they follow after the steps of the famous Tiger Woods in terms not only of golfing skills, but also physical build.

Neil looks forward to doing what he loves best, which is helping and teaching as the head trainer of WGAC, for the next 25 to 30 years of his life.  With the idea coming from his massage therapist, Neil got certified and presently holds 8 different certifications as he learned more about the different CrossFit techniques that he could teach his students.

Based from his learnings and own research, he emphasizes the importance of moving right.  According to him, this is very foundational as the students start with a manageable weight.  Many people hurt themselves as they try to put on weight without the proper system and procedure.  Even seniors have shown great improvement in terms of mobility and strength when others would have expected them to be fragile way after their prime years, physically speaking.

Diet: The Favorite Word, Not!
When asked about diet, Neil candidly stated that he does not like such word.  He believes that food is not the only factor involved in getting healthy, but also the lifestyle.  Neil also offers nutritional consultation and helps his students come up with a balanced meal that includes carbs, protein, and fats.  He also assesses whether there is a need for more amount in one of these areas.  He educates his students about the difference between good fat and bad fat, between good carbs versus bad carbs.

For those who are taking this health matter in a totally whole new level, Neil recommends calculating their food - weighing them even just to make sure that they are strictly complying with the dietary requirements.  Neil encourages his students to stay away from sports drinks.  Instead, he recommends the hydrogenated water that he offers.  Aside from food and liquid intake, there are tests that these people can undergo to assess their health and body better.  Neil stresses though that each one is different.  What may be applicable to one person may not be applicable to another.

According to Neil, getting healthy is expensive.  Some people spend so much on health insurance and surgeries when they can start investing on their bodies by eating healthy and doing healthful activities.  This way, they spend less on health coverage and feel good inside and out.

Neil likes it better to pursue his passion in helping others through teaching them how to be fitter and healthier.  For him, what he does now is much better than golf.  According to Neil, it is more personally gratifying for him to see people change as a whole – this is a totally new level of satisfaction for him.
